Materials - Testing procedures

Here you find the most important standard test procedures for the mechanical testing of (bio-)materials for implants (e.g. bone cements) and other specific applications:

Coatings:

Acrylic bone cement:

  • ASTM F2118: Constant amplitude of force controlled fatigue testing of acrylic bone cement materials
  • ISO 16402: Flexural fatigue testing of acrylic resin cements

Metallic materials:

  • ASTM E466: Force controlled constant amplitude axial fatigue tests of metallic materials

Plastic materials:

  • ASTM F2977: Small punch testing of polymeric biomaterials
  • ASTM D732: Shear strength of plastics by punch tool
  • ASTM F2102: Evaluating the extent of oxidation in polyethylene (oxidation index, OI)
  • ASTM D638: Tensile properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics
  • ASTM D790: Flexural properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics
  • ASTM D256: Izod pendulum Impact resistance of plastics
  • ASTM F6110: Charpy Impact Resistance of Notched Specimens of Plastics

Ceramics:

  • ISO 13356: requirements and corresponding test methods for a biocompatible and biostable ceramic bone-substitute material based on yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia
